How do I control the 3d settings of my viewport?

Edit: sorry, initially I was also wondering how I could rotate an OBJ model, but I solved that problem. My second question remains though:

The 3D in the camera viewport usually distorts any 3D object in a very crude manner. When it gets too close to the camera the perspective on the model goes way too extreme, while the orbit tool doesn't distort my models like that. Can I get my viewport to use the same 3D settings as the orbit tool?

The distortion you see is directly connected to the focal length of the virtual) lens you're using. Select the focal length tool (5 in v8): default is 60 which means 60°viewing angle. A smaller value gives you a tele lens, get further away from your object and the distortions vanish.
