not sure how to describe what i want

how do i get something to appear on the timeline later than 0?
for instance, i want the opening scene to pan in on the title, then i want the title to disappear and have the word "staring" to appear. then i need that to disappear and show a picture of my character.
i finally upgraded from debut 8 to pro 9
, but i can't figure out this simple feat. i bought the videos, but it's just the vids you get free on the site. still worth it i guess, for when i'm not around internet service.
i don't know how to search for a solution, because i'm not sure what it is actually i'm looking for. if one of you kind ladies and gents could help, i would greatly appreciate it.
