Does anybody have any idea why an object just stops and then flys off the screen?

Not without seeing the file no. It could be the gravity setting, friction to high, density to low, the object is too small, a nudge key that is too powerful, other objects around it, etc etc etc. There could other possibilities. Not enough information.
