How Do I Make Sword Slashing Flare Visual Effect

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I could make sword slashing flare effects similar to the ones used in Samaurai Jack. Parker used them for the pilot episode to his warrior scar web series awhile back viewtopic.php?f=8&t=18460&start=75 He also had a tutorial posted on content paradise but it is no longer available. Can anyone please give me a few tips on what I could do?
