Masking doesn't render

My character mask wount render!
I am using Debut 9.0 and have followed this tutorial to learn masking http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3TteudWOz8.
In stead of a shape I am using a character as a mask because I want to create a silhuette of a walking character.
The mask appears to work fine when I am in the editing mode, but when I render out the film it doesn't work! In stead of a black silhouette the character comes out in full colours and details
What is wrong?
