It's very very difficult to figure out what is going on based on your descriptions. It would help if you could provide us with the file. Upload it to a file sharing site and link it here.

With the actual file to look at it will save so much guessing and trial and error. Some of those issues could be caused by any number of things. Also, your descriptions are based on a lack of knowledge of the program (not a criticism just a fact) this makes it hard to interpret what might be going on.
