..Understand the timeline layers in red and black?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for an explanation of the red and black (bones for example) on the timeline.

I've read the AS 9 book and it just glosses over them. I'm trying to isolate keyframes on a 5-bone item and I just keep getting them all confused.
The definitions of the "selected bone" versus all the bones selected isn't making sense to me.

Can someone dumb this down and maybe provide an example?

thanks,

cheers.

Black: all keys of one kind, like all bones, or all points, in that layer.
Red: the keys of what you have selected, one or more bones, or one or more points, etc.
