I have a fully animating character from Cartoon Solutions similar to AS Character Wizard, Front, Side & Back views. I want to turn the head during the animation. I can accomplish it by exchanging the heads, but when I do the exchange shows in the animation, that is, the actual heads being swapped.

Generally you make the switch during a larger movement to hide the switch. See this:
