My finished exported animation looks dark and dingy, although everything looks bright and clean in the editor

I know that certain codecs make your images brighter and less saturared, but darker?
Check if you have any effects active which only show in render.

What effects would I be looking for and where do I look?

Could you maybe do a screenshot of the project window and the video output and post it here?

Layer blend modes could do that, and it wouldn't show in the workspace.

Just a thought but have you tried a different player? Some players may apply gamma correction to make certain movie file types look 'better'. If yours does, it's probably an option in the player's preferences.

Another thought:
You didn't mention YouTube or Vimeo, but if you used a preset for these services, a correction maybe be intentionally applied to make the movies look correct after you upload the files. In Vegas, for example, I need to apply a Computer RGB to Studio RGB Levels preset for Vimeo or YouTube uploads. This can make the video look dark when you play it locally but correct on YouTube or Vimeo.
