How do I split an object

I was trying to split the pants on two layers but when I selected the left half and copy and pasted this happened:

It should look like this though:

All layers are grayed out and I cant see any fills. Only the stroke outlines when I select the layer.

That's odd. It looks like you somehow copied the path but not the shape that's attached to the path. I think I've done this myself before but I'm not sure how it happened--at the time, I just assumed it was a glitch since it never happened again. Does it happen every time for you?

I think normally, that shouldn't happen. I just tried to intentionally re-create what you're seeing but I can't figure out how you did it without first deleting the shape. How are you copying the artwork? If you click directly on the fill, it should select that fill along with the points and the path, and then the Copy command should copy all of it.

I suppose there may be a way to copy just the path without the shapes by design, which may be what your doing by accident, but now I'm just guessing.

(Note that if you're stacking multiple shapes using some or all of the same points in the path, direct clicking might not necessarily copy all the shapes. For that, you're better off lasso-ing the whole thing. But that's a special case and it probably doesn't apply here.)

Hopefully, someone who knows more about this situation will pop in to explain soon.

I just selected everything with g and then cut and paste. Fill was gone for the leg so I tried to reconnect the points and then this somehow happened.

I also realized that my art is split all over the timeline even tough I didn't use it. When i try to fix it by copy and pasting to frame 0 the fills vanish.

Does this happen every time? If not, it was probably just a fluke.

Since the shape is still there, you should be able to select it and create a new fill using the Create Shape tool. I think previous fill settings should still be active unless they've been changed to something else since the time you created the shape.

Paint Bucket will probably work too.

I think I've found the problem when I create a new layer there automatically are keyframes in it. Is it possible to reset wipe the timeline completely?

This is so strange I've tried again making a new layer to paste onto and this time it was empty.

I've tried again and now every new vector layer containes those keyframes.

I had to duplicate layer that had nothing in the timeline to make it work.

Yes, there are actually multiple commands for bulk-removing keys from the scene under the Animation - Clear Animation menu. What you probably want is Clear From Document, which removes all keyframes from every layer.

I don't know if this is still happens but I think keyframes that exist before frame zero might not be affected. If that's still the case, you may need to slide the layer with the keyframes in the Sequencer to bring those keyframes ahead of zero. That might not affect you but I thought I should mention it just in case--this behavior stumped me back when I was still learning.

Now that I've removed all messed up layers it works I can copy and paste the points and fills work. The bug where the new layers had keyframes is gone too.
Must have been a bug.

One layer still had some keyframes I tried to remove them with the clear menu but they just stayed nothing happened. I tried cutting and pasting to a new layer but that would copy the keyframes too.

I had to redraw it to get rid of the keyframes.

Did you try copying the problem keyframes to frame zero before trying to delete them?

No I haven't but I doubt it would have worked, they were unresponsive to even the delete key.

That is exactly why I said copy them to frame zero first. Some keyframes made in non-standard ways can become "orphaned" because they have no frame zero value. Why don't you try it and learn something?

If I have the problem again I will but I can't recreate it since I dont know how they came into existence in the first place.
