Switch layers and bones (also, one other question)

I'm using a simple one-layer rig, and, since it's a side view of the character, I want to be able to switch between two positions of the palms: one where the back of the palm is facing the camera and another where the palm is parallel to the ground. And, honestly, I can't see at first glance what method I should use to be able to toggle between different subsets of bones for the palms and fingers. Basically, I don't know how to add any more bones outside of the basic skeleton layer. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Also, I've got another question regarding bones. I want to insert an additional bone between the shin bone and the foot bone; this additional bone would serve as a "handle" so as to make it easier to manipulate the leg. If I add this bone to the foot bone, i.e. as the last bone in the "leg" sequence, it works. If I add it anywhere earlier, it doesn't. I know this thing I want to do is possible, because I saw in one of the pre-made rigs. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Switch layers can also have bones, or you could put bone layers in the switch for different rigging for each view. Just bind switch layers to the bone you want them to follow, like the forearm bone for a hand switch.

Sounds like you're talking about a target bone used to animate the limb. Should be plenty of tutorials around for that.

OK, I understand now why the Target function wasn't working: turns out you need to unparent the bone before setting it as a target.
I've also found out how to bind bone layers to other bone layers. Basically, problem solved. Yay!
