Bones on top of each other

I know this is an easy one, but it's my first attempt at a real profile walk cycle for actual use, so I'm not looking at tutorials while I work. I have front and back arm layers that are identical. I've rigged the front layer up and added smart bones for the bending. How do I copy the layer AND have it duplicate the bones so that I don't have to re-do the smart bones for the back arm? If that's not possible, I can create new bones for the back layer and just make the smart bones over again, but the front arm bones are in the same place so it's really hard to tell which bones I'm point binding to. I can hide the layer artwork, but what I want to do is hide the bones I don't need to be looking at.
