Shoveling Animation

I have a completed character rigged with bones and all that, but now I'm trying to have the character holding a shovel with both hands. The only animations I've done with characters holding objects has been with one hand, and now I'm struggling to do a two-handed object animation. I tried different point/layer binding and rigging the shovel with bones, but I just can't seem to get it right. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Just bind the shovel to an unparented bone, with child bones where you want the hand bones to connect. Then target the hand bones to these. Be sure to enable Arc IK Solver for all the hand/arm bones.
