I am unable to get a transparent background in AVI files that have been imported into an image layer. I want the avi to look like a png file only moving. My talking head shows the whole frame

i'm not sure (about i'll say and about you saw), but there is a codec to export avi movies with alpha. i saw it in the links (perhaps). you can work with this and moho.

Not sure if this is an option for you, but if you use quicktime with the animation codec (millions of colors+ setting) you can do this.
