The whole changing opacity from 0 to 100% doesn't work as it doesn't create any frames when i change opacity. It just either stays Black throughout if its 100% or transparent throughout is its 0% but it won't fade as no keyframe is made.

Can someone please help or provide any alternatives?

First check "allow animated layer effects" in the layer tab. Only after that create keyframes.
