I'm planning a project where the animators are working from different places so I need some management software to keep it all together.
First it needs to have a management database kind of thing to keep track of all the scenes, what's to be done, have been done, and by whom.
Second it need to have some file management thing, ftp-based seems the best way, which keeps everybody up to date and makes sure everybody has the latest files and right versions and everything is working together between all people involved.

Preferably open source or freeware.

I have been searching the net and found different ones but none I've felt would be perfect for this project, so has anyone any experience with this kind of thing and can recommend some good software?

Thiere is an old popular app here

http://www.majordojo.com/

which may be helpful and he has a new one here

http://testrun.majordojo.com/

that is in Beta. They offer the ability to host it yourself or have them host it for a monthly fee. You can use the beta software and they say anyone using the beta who provides feedback will get special discounted prices.

Code: Select all

                         Monthly Annual
1 User Free Free
Up to 5 Users $4.99 $49.99
Up to 10 Users $14.99 $149.99

Other than that you might be able to set up a cms like websitebaker.com and require registration so all pages would be private to your group. There are several mods including downloads, calendar, news and so on available that you might be able to use to cobble together a team site.

Great. If you do use them you might also give us a short review or feedback on what you think as others might find themselves in the same position. :)

This may be overkill, but sourceforge (the software, not the site itself) might work for what you are wanting too. There are clones of this too, such as berlios, and gnu savannah.

Other packages you might want to investigate include groupware that have todo lists and file managers, such as horde, open xchange, and collab.net. Again, these are large packages and may be overkill for what you need.
