Do not use nested structures for mask layers

It is recommended to use lines to represent each other's affiliation, similar to the Adobe AE layer, to avoid functional issues within and outside the group.
Yup i second this. That's one huge advantage of a node based workflow or how AE is doing it. It doesn't really matter where the layer is, as long as you define it as a mask to another layer it's fine. All the unnecessary groups i end up with just to mask some things off...
You could just do it as a drop down in the Layer settings à la: Use this layer as Mask, Inversed Mask. If a group is selected, it will use the whole content of the group.
