using 'frame by frame' layer for switching

Hi
I am new to Moho and apologize if this is a silly question.

I am experimenting with using a set of 'Frame by Frame' hand drawn layer images to clone on various frames in much the same way as you would expose drawing substitutions in the timeline within Toonboom. I like the way I can use the 'Switch Selection Window' to view and clone the frame layer drawings at a different frame number, but I wish I could rename those individual frame drawings/layers so that instead of a drawing automatically being called layer'X' I could call it 'mouthOpen' for example and select it from the drop down menu when I right click on the frame by frame layer.

Alternatively is it possible to convert a frame by frame layer to a switch layer where each child frame layer drawing is converted to a child vector layer of the switch (they can all be at frame 0 then too)? Perhaps it's just not the right workflow for Moho and I'm better off creating the vector layers, putting them under a switch layer and working from there, but it just seems like it would be faster to get there with frame by frame.

Thanks in advance for any help, I hope this makes sense.

You can convert an FBF layer to a Switch and vice versa from the Layer Settings window. (Enable/disable Frame By Frame.)

To view all the frames of a Switch layer simultaneously, create an empty Group above the Switch layer and drag the contents of the Switch to the Group. When you've finished editing, you can drag all the layers back into the Switch layer. Even if you've previously keyframed animation for the Switch, the keyframes will still be valid so long as you haven't changed the layer names.

BTW, there is a script by Pony Smasher that automates this trick...just select the Switch and click the tool, and everything gets moved to a new Group; click it again to move everything back. You can download it from his website.

Tip: Arrange your Switch's layers from bottom upward. It's easier to manage this way because Moho creates new layers upward. Also, the Switch Selection window reads from bottom up.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions so well! This is perfect. Being able to convert FBF to Switch, then group the layers, and put them back into a switch is exactly the kind of workflow I was looking for. I have only just started my dive into Moho and am very impressed so far. Thanks again Greenlaw.
