Where are some good places to go online to find people interested in collaborating on making cartoons just for fun? I'm always reluctant to ask anybody to work for free, but as far as making cartoons goes, I'm more like the guy in the garage looking for a bass player to come over and have a few beers and play some songs.

The hardest lesson to learn about animating was coming to grips with the overwhelming amount of work it takes to finish even the smallest projects. I've been on and off the forum here for 14 years now and I've set several projects aside because they need either another designer, voice actor, or script writer. And I'm always reluctant to ask people to work on projects with no budgets or deadlines. I have no idea why it never occurred to me to just ask you guys.

So for any of the different aspects of putting together a silly cartoon, whether it's character design, voice acting, script writing, animating, or anything involved, where are some good places to check out?

I found this one the other day. I haven't posted on the site yet but it actually has sections for paid and unpaid projects so it looks promising...

A ssoon as you look online for help you very likely end up in the professionals section, means, people do help, but only for money.

If in any way possible, try to meet and get aquainted with people in your area in real life. (Here, in Berlin, this part is easy, of course.) Others are much more likely to help you if they know you in person and can decide if they like you and trust you, and vice versa.

I don't go there, but friends told me that there's some helpful community on Twitch and Discord, the main hurdle is that you have to find the right groups/channels for you.

In any case it's necessary that you already have your own website/channel where others can watch your stuff and can decide whether it's worth their time to help you.

Yeah I typically ask, or draft, musician friends into helping with voices because lots of them have their own home recording equipment and we can swap files online. Those have been fun.

I live in a pretty small town but there is a community college here that has a theatre group. Maybe a couple people there would want to try voice acting

That's a very good idea. Maybe if you take a short recording of some of tehir dialogue and lipsync some characters to it, this will show them what to expect?
