I have already made smart bone actions for each bone to prevent warping, but this still happens no matter what and it's driving me crazy. How else can I prevent this?

Split it into two different shapes. That will stop the shape-overlapping-itself-hole.

You might want to watch the vector drawing tutorial I posted a while back. It covers splitting a shape so it can overlap itself and other shapes.

I like to split the art at the joint in separate layers, which gives me freedom to stack a limb in front of and behind the torso. If you do this, you'll want to add a point to the 'split' curve segment in one of the layers and pull the point over the seam in the second layer. This will keep the seam from rendering as a thin gap. (The seam only appears when the layers are separated into layers and rendered with anti-aliasing enabled.)
