I have a scene where a chicken character is flying .in order do the smearing i want to hide the layer and use frame by frame animation.but i am unable to hide the layer. The layer is visible yet the timeline is red. when i try to hide the shape layer using the quick setting it shows visible.whether i put visible or invisible the layers stays the same.
what seems to be the problem here.would be really great to solve this issue.

Above the hand r2 layer is a group (with a broken reference icon). It's not clear from the image if that is a switch layer, but if it is, then it's likely that hand r2 is not the active child.

If that isn't it then:
* The timeline shows a keyframe in layer visibility - check that is not set to "invisible".
* The image posted doesn't show if that group is itself in a group, but perhaps is, and it's that higher group that is invisible.

If that isn't it, can you take a screenshot of the full layer structure and/or upload the problem file.

Could the visibility keyframe be inside a Smart Bone Action? This would explain why the keyframe is not visible in the Mainline's Timeline.

That said, I think a keyframe in the Mainline might override the one in the Smart Bone's Timeline, so maybe not. Hmm. (Regardless, if there IS a keyframe in the SBA, you might still want to fix that.)

Anyway, I agree with Hayasidist, it's hard to tell what's going on with what's shown in the image. It would be easier to troubleshoot if you submitted a stripped-down version of the Project file. Otherwise, we're just guessing, and I can probably guess a half dozen possibilities.

i have added another image.as you can see its not a switch layer. i used a smartbone to switch between 3hands which are referenced from the first pair of hand.inside the smartbone i used layer visibility to make the hand which i need visible and the other one invisible. the second hand (hand r2) is the one that shows red timeline.i found a workaround using layer opacity.but it would be nice to know.

if I understand you correctly - you have a SB action that can turn off the visibility of the target layer (i.e. the layer of which hand r2 is a reference copy).

That's most probably going to cause the reference copy to follow the target's visibility.
