I'm not going to go though everything on OpenArt but:

1) Go to Character and click on add Character.
2) Click on Create a character
3) Click on "Start with 4+ images. I use ones from aicreate
4) Once your Character is crated use the Character sheet, Action sheet and Emotion sheet for new images.

This is free, and it will save you a ton of work.

Yes. I think it is free for one a day at a time or 9 dollars a month. I use a separate account with less than 300 dollars for these websites.

For environmental backgrounds it's one of the best ways to get them. Between the two main game engines unity beats unreal hands down. You're right it's a big install but it's not that bad. Unreal is a huge install.
The advantages of unity, there are plenty of free environments to download. It has a camera recording system that you can also add that can do frame by frame. And the cameras are able to clip the recording.. Meaning that you can set the camera to render the foreground with a solid color. Then you can render the background where the foreground is a solid color. Very useful in Moho.
