Color points, won't let me change strength on single point

Just experimenting with this "old/new" feature I never tried before. Color points. It's fantastic.
Anyway following a tutorial on youtube and have been trying to adjust one point of a point group of color points. It won't let me change the color strength. The number changes and briefly the value of the color on screen does change. When I do a test render the value has not changed. It simply defaults back to the original strength. I even created a single point that is part of a line of points that was set up seperately. It to will always default to the entire connected set of points color value. The individual points will not allow a color strength modification. I can see it in edit view but the render shows the same full strength. Also after rendering the display on screen shows the previous color point strength but the VALUE in the box is still the one it was changed to. For some reason it isn't getting set properly.
Also setting the value by typing numbers the same issue. Even setting to 0 it simply jumps to 1 or 100%. It constantly defaults back to what appears to be the ORIGINAL VALUE when the color points were created, that would be 1 or 100%. Clearing the color points does nothing either. If I clear it and start over, the value ALWAYS DEFAULTS TO THE FIRST TIME I ADDED THE COLOR POINTS. I can't change the color strength value on any of the points once they are set. They are stuck permenantly.
When I change the value I can see it on screen very briefly. Any screen refresh resets the values back to 1. When I render, it defaults back to the original value, and when I close the test render, the screen value has also reset back to the original VALUE of what I set when creating the color points. THE NUMBERS IN THE POINT COLOR STRENGTH ARE CHANGING but the color strength itself never changes. It will briefly display that changed value then it JUMPS back to 1. The number in the box is still at the new number I set but not what's on screen or in the render. To change any value I have to delete the shape entirely and start over.
I only just started playing with this today. This could be user error but it doesn't appear to be working properly. I followed the tutorial, and the tool itself is pretty simple with limited options.
EDIT: Deleting shape doesn't work either. It seems to remember the color points added and when I create a new shape on same points it has exact same behavior. there's no way to remove that value or even to remove the color points. I can change the color, but the strength value never changes. The numbers in the box change, making that clear. It says 0 but the full strength is displayed. If I type in numbers nothing changes. It will briefly change when dragging the numbers up and down but the color strength on screen only displays correctly until a screen refresh
