Animate drawing a line?

I'd like to animate drawing lines....
For example, I'd like to create a video over a backdrop of football players with X's and O's being drawn as if it were a football commentary or something.
That's really all I want, but feel free to go ahead and describe how one might animate someone drawing a stick figure or something...
