I was just looking through the sample movies in Anime Studio Pro. In the User Movies folder, there's one called "Squeaky 10 sec" with a carrot and an onion. The onion has a face that does a side turn.

If you change the camera angle, you can see that the face pieces are actually curved like they were once mapped on a ball or something, and are sticking out in front of the face.

How on earth did the author do that??

Man, I wish there were some how-to notes with some of those sample movies - trying to figure out how they were done is making my head hurt! Good work!

the author organized the layers in the 3d space.
inside the onion body, is a group called "face rotation".
he puts inside this group all the face layers (switch for mouths and eyes, and bones for eyebrows). then, he moved and rotated each bone and switch layer in the space, using alt to move in z, to get something as a 3d face (without the 3d head)

you must see where is the origin of "face rotation" group to understand. he just rotated the layer group to obtain the head turn (see at the timeline).
he did the same with all the peas.
it's clever, but be calm, is not difficult.

Thanks! I didn't think about rotating the layer itself. I'm still getting to terms with the easy stuff.
