Hello Everyone

brand new to this forum

I have only just discovered A.S.

from the images provided on the website it looks amazing but I have questions

let me give you some background

I have experience with 3d, I studied 3DSMax in grad school have owned lightwave since ver6.5 (I have 8x now) and know my way around combustion 3x

I want to make a film noir animation and I 'm looking for a good combination of programs to help me achieve that
from what I read A.S. can handle OBJ files which means I could model characters and sets in Lightwave and import them into the application
would I no longer need to composite

what about being able to add textures via photoshop
fially how does the program behave on a mac? I am running a G5 tower and a G4powerbook and might use A.S. to set up shots on the laptop and render out on the tower

I realize these are varied questions but if someone can provide me with some insight before I make a purchase that would be awesome

The 3D support in AS is... not what you are thinking of... I think.

3D objects brought in... aren't "exactly" like they appear in the originating 3D app.

3D characters brought in would not be posable or animatable from any type of skeleton from the original application.

Some people have been able to break the objects into "pieces" on different layers... or bound to bones in some way.

AS is not a 3D application... but it supports "limited" 3D. Some of the 3D stuff I've seen done in AS is very good... but from my 3D experience... I just don't have the patience to jump through the hoops.



You could render backgrounds and sets in a 3D app and rotoscope in AS. That is easy to do and works very well.

Characters are another story. If you plan to use 3D characters in AS... you might be dissapointed in the effort required and the results. Depends on how complex the characters are and what you expect.

Some people have "mixed" both 3D and 2D elements for characters with good results.

I prefer the 2D strengths of AS. I have a 3D application that is great. I use it for 3D and AS for 2D. I would get too frustrated with the limited 3D in AS to use it there... but that is just my opinion. If I need both... I would probably composite.

I started to use "Moho/AS" because I felt limited by "3D". I could "animate drawings" with AS... 3D requires a lot more preliminary set up work.

I have used Moho exclusively on the Mac for more than a year now. Works great.

However, I upgraded from Moho to AS for the PC so I have no experience with the AS version on the Mac. I won't comment on... any issues in that regard without firsthand experience.
