I know that isn't much, but you might have a look and see if it is something useful for you.

What exactly is giving you trouble with the drawing? In terms of technique, it's very similar to vector drawing applications like Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW!, Inkscape, etc.

If you're just using the Add point tool to draw, you have to be careful to have your cursor over the last point you drew before starting to draw another stroke. Otherwise, you end up with two disconnected lines.
With the freehand tool, you just draw strokes like a pencil, but you end up with more points than if you just add them one at a time.

I think a video tutorial will not help you here. You seem to like sketching with your cursor, like with a real pencil. This will not work in vector drawing, because sketching is a pixel drawing method.
Vector drawing is more like cleaning up a drawing, very precise and final. If you like drawing roughly and loosely, and don't want to learn a new way of drawing, perhaps you should use a pixel drawing program to design your models and use AS to trace your sketches. Vector drawing suposes that you already a very clear idea in your head of what you are going to draw.
Furthermore, a good input device is invaluable. You can use a mouse--and if you do, use a good one (Microsoft seems to create fine mice)--or an art tablet (Wacom seems to create fine tablets). If you constantly are distracted by the ackwardness of your input device, it is very likely you take longer to do a drawing in AS and you will probably be less productive over the day.
BTW To connect two points that are close together, try using the Auto Weld script (through the menu Scripts -> other -> Auto weld). To adjust how many points are created by the freehand tool, try adjusting the Angle and Pixel Tolerance of the Freehand Options. Remember that AS usually needs twice the number of points that other vector drawing programs use for a similar vector drawing, because of the type of curves that AS uses.
