I'm looking for a freeware app or technique to approximate the same results as Rotoshop.

Does anyone have a links to point me to?

Thanks,

According to their website

http://www.flatblackfilms.com/Rotoshop.html

it's proprietary software and is not available outside of Flat Black Films.

Same technique and software was used for "Waking Life" and "A Scanner Darkly".

It would be interesting to see how long they keep this program from public purchase.

I am sure it will be very expensive when it does "hit the shelves". The problem they have is how long to wait. Eventually someone will replicate the technique or create a similar application and then the proprietary value will go way down.

Currently as far as I can tell there is not really anything else like it out there. Maybe some plugins for AE? I don't know. I read a lot of "tutorials" for replicating the effect using photoshop filters but nothing that is as "good" as Rotoshop.

You should rent the movie Waking Life and look at the DVD extras. The software is pretty amazing although it doesn't "automate" the process as much as you think. It is still an agonizing amount of work.
