I have read elsewhere that the "render tool" that they speak about in the tutorials does not exist in Anime Studio 5, is that correct? When changing gradients and line widths, I find this really annoying. Am I missing something? What is the best way to see what your finished product will look like, while it is still a work in progress? Thanks.

yes, it's currently only in the Pro version (which was missed in the tutorials), but it will be added to the standard version in an update due out soon.
