Effects in Style Pallet

Hello I can't seem to get the effects in the Style Pallet to work and if they do they're only visible under Render in the file menu. Is there a way I can see the effects on the main window I'm working in

No you can only see effects by rendering or exporting.
Are they "not working" because you can't see them in preview?
Use the select shape tool and make sure you have a shape selected before changing the effects in the palette.
