Discovered the problem. Small oversight on the part of the manual writer. Uncheck beginner's mode, then all the tools actually appear. They're invisible until then. Then you can follow the manual. The tutorials in the package are almost useless. They tell you to use the zoom tool and don't even tell you where it is.
