splashing water

What I am trying to achieve is this:

A fish leaves the water, drawing with a trail of water droplets. (This is not a problem moving a particles group.)

However, I then want the droplets to fall to the water again without being replaced by new particles. In effect, to stop the creation of new particles. The best I have been able to do is to fade the particles away, and this does not look great.

Is this something that can be done with particles again or would it be easier to animate the droplets manually?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Without seeing the actual file, I'd think translating the particle layer back down would work. I imagine it'd have to go down pretty fast to overcome the particle speed, and perhaps with some layer scaling to mimic a spreading splash.

Highlight the particle layer then look at the Timeline. You will see a particle symbol to the left hand side of the screen at the top of the timeline. This controls particle seeding and you can turn it on and off, similar to using visibility on the timeline .
