depth of field bug

Sorry I can't post the file, copyright n that.
I'm rendering a image based composition, rigged characters plus particles.
Each bone layer is spread through z depth away from cam, this is a process I have done many times with success.
Unfortunately now the top image layer in each bone layer is rendering out of focus even though it shares the same z depth as the others in the same layer (0) .
This gives the impression of completely random focus.
(there are no blurs on any layers)
Any clues to how to fix this?

Apparently, according to our expert at Animators Forum, Wes, DOF is calculated by x and y as well as z. if this is the case then it definitely needs looking at by the dev team before the next release. We really need some reliability and predictability in features.
