Putting a character in front of *and* behind a prop

Hi again! I'm back at it with my "live performance" animated music video. My character needs a lot of tweaking but the basic rig is more or less done, and now I want it to be able to stand behind the microphone, while also being able to place its hands "on top" of it, layer wise.

I am assuming that the best solution would be to have the microphone prop be a part of the character's bone layer? I'm a newbie and doubting my every assumption still, though. :D

Correct and have the arm/hand layers sets in front of and behind of the mic so you can switch to those when you need to be in front of and behind the mic.
