Gradient tool not working.

I know how to use the gradient tool, but it's not working. All i get is the select shape tool thingy for itensifing ths colors. The shape stays the same color. I'm not sure if i checked something or unchecked something for it to behave this way.

Thanks for the video. Changing the angle of a gradient was one thing I could never work out, but simple when you know how.
