A little electric storm using the AS Layer Proporties Visable function
Visable check uncheck check check uncheck all at random with a half dozen or so pngs made with paint.net mini brush effect a vector of darkness and sound effects from freesound .org and wa la a lighting storm. I re -did this later on and used switch layers which works as well and was easier to control.

Looks great, it really feels like a storm. I especially like the one that goes diagonally across the screen. Did you use pictures of lightning as reference?
These could also look cool with some blending mode effects to give it that blindingly bright look if that fits with your style. I just did a quick test with some vector lighting. You can duplicate the lightning layer, blur the lower lightning layer and set the top lightning layer's blending mode to screen. There are probably other ways to do this, too. Of course the screen blending mode trick might be too bright for some contexts. Nice work!

I used Paint.net mini brush effects to make lighting bolts then alpha removed i saved them as PNGs. The Lightning bolt brushes are available from brusheez web site for free along with a godzillion other brushes. If your not familiar with the Paint.net's Mini Brush effect or transforming Bruheezys brushes to work in paint.net I can dig up the tutorial, its somewhere on the net .

Then blured I them a bit in AS property layers. The colors were done in the mini brush process
