Tutorial 2.2 Drawing shapes with holes

Post by Toontoonz »

Has anyone ever made a hole using this technique described in the Moho tutorial 2.2 - Drawing shapes with holes?.

I have followed it word by word and never get any holes. (So obviously I am missing something).

I think I am getting hung up on the sentence:
"Once you've set up curves to define the shape of the hole, all you need to do is select the outline and the hole(s) using the Create Shape tool."

"...select the outline and the hole(s) using the Create Shape tool."

Is that the outline of the hole or the outline of not the hole or both or the outline of not the hole and the shape of the hole?

Does one have to hold the shift key down? - because when I select those things the other one gets unselected.

No matter what I do no holes are made. Any tips???

Could somebody write the simple steps you take to make a hole in your vector drawings? Thanks.
(I can´t remember ever seeing any Moho animations that use objects with holes in them.)

Toontoonz! (HI!) Where is the problem??? You only must select ALL and if you have two (or more) closed forms, the small inside of the other become in a hole when you create a shape... You can use Shift key to add more forms to the selection, VERY EASY! When you catch it you'll see it! CIAO!

Hello Toontoonz,

Ramón has answered, but here's another version - maybe with a combination of both, it will click.

How about "...select the line defining the main shape and the line(s) defining the hole(s) using the Create Shape tool."

These are blank, unfilled "outlines" and "shapes", not renderable outlines and shapes.

Yes. Or, use the lasso mode of the selection tool to grab at least one point each from the main "shape" and the holes, then hit Tab to select connected, then change to the shape creation tool (the fill tool, not the add point tool - "shape" has two meanings in Moho)

Turn off Auto-fill and Auto-outlines when drawing the main "shape" and holes. Select all the points of the the main "shape" and holes, then change to the create shape tool (the fill tool thingy, large white kidney bean, no umbrella).

Here's a visual walk-through:

Regards, Myles - who needs another word for shape that doesn't clash with the Moho definition - umm, closed curve? form? contour?

Ramon and Myles thanks for the tips.

Myles - it was your visual walk thru demonstration that really helped. A good learning tool you created.

Going back to the Moho tutorial 2.2, I see that it could be written much clearer.

You are correct that Moho sometimes has a problem of using one word that has multiple meanings.

Although I already knew how to create holes from own experience, I found your explanation very clear. Thanks!

Once I got the making holes in a shape figured out, I decided to make a little animation.
A face with eye holes and mouth hole...that kind of looks a bit troll-like once I finished with all the Moho magic...

@myles - thanks for the example. Although I knew how to do this I was actually flustered by this in the beginning; your visual example is clear and too the point.

@Toontoonz - Nice example. I don't know why but I hadn't considered punching holes in a layer and putting the eyes behind even though it seems obvious to me now; looks good and I will probably use this for eyes now.

There are many, many possibilities of what one can do with the 2D object in the 3D Moho world. :D :D :D

I have always wondered why all the people that want more 3D features in Moho have not used this technique (holes in head and eyeballs, etc, behind skull in head) with importing 3D models into Moho. I´m not a big user of 3D modeling, so perhaps it is not possible to use in conjunction with Moho.
