I contacted technical support and they added the update to my basket very quickly. It's strange that FastSpring can't solve the problem though.

Thanks guys for the hot tip in this thread to try live chat support - I did so about 10 minutes ago and the issue was promptly resolved for me (put it in my cart as above.) The live chat thing is great, and again I was happy to see that Smith Micro had the presence of mind to have on the live chat info page their business hours and also their local time. Makes it very convenient for overseas users, and there are a lot of us.

The guy I spoke to on live chat said he'd report the issue to the website people. Issue being the update link takes me to a page with a "cart empty" error and a popup requesting licence number. Entering the licence number sends me back to smith micro homepage.
