I am dealing with mostly images, not vectors. So I have a character and I want this character to stand in a small boat. I have an image of a board and I want the legs to be inside the boat so the side of the boat will be blocking the legs.
I thought I could just create a mask that will hide the legs at the boarder between the boat wall and the top of the boat but this seems to only work when I create a shape with a solid background. If I make the shape totally transparent, the image inside disappears too. So I am not sure how else to accomplish this.

A mask has to be set to 100% opacity to work correctly.
Since you're already using images, you could as well copy that boat side and put it on top.

Re: hide part of an image or make a mask with transparent ba
Yes, that did occur to me and I could do it. I would need to use an outside program to cut out part of the boat and place it on top in AS.
I was hoping for a different solution as that wouldn't work for everything. I was imagining other scenarios where that method wouldn't works so well.

Instead of masking the character, mask the boat.
Use two copies of the same boat image layer, one in the back (not masked), and one over the character with the mask drawn to the exact shape of the front part of the boat you want to show. This would be the same as cutting the image apart in an image editor but instead using masking in Anime Studio to "fake it".
Or you could mask the character with a shape the exact shape of the front part of the boat image. Set the boat image to "Do not mask" and put it below the character layer.
Using an image editor to create "boat layers" would be easier. If you plan using images with Anime Studio very much you really need some type of image editor. If cost is an issue I recommend Gimp since it's open source and free.

Re: hide part of an image or make a mask with transparent ba
Hey, thanks for the idea to mask the boat.
And I do use Gimp, it's wonderful software.
And I agree that in my boat example, using a modified boat layer to block the character would be easy, I can think of other examples where masking would be the best way to go.

Re: hide part of an image or make a mask with transparent ba
I figured out how to do this.
I made mask layer and put the character in the the layer, then I made a white square and covered the top of the the boat with it. Then I set the mask layer to "hide all". I set the character to "Mask this Layer" and I set the white square to "add to mask but keep invisible".
Now everything below the rim of the boat becomes invisible and it looks like the character is in the boat.
