Re: April Fools - A Nick and Will Short
Even though simple and short it contains much deeper themes.
One theme is the contrast of human nature, a revelation of the dark potential we all possess. We can be both good and evil. We have the unexpected generosity of Nicholas presenting a gift to his friend William only to reveal the evil lurking inside him. Also presented is the contrast of humor and horror in everyday events. Remember, it's only funny till someone puts out an eye... or cuts off a head!
Don't be fooled by the seemingly simple sight gag this appears to be. Another theme is the presentation of quantum entanglement. Until he opens the box and sees his own head William is both dead and alive. That is the paradox.
Or it's just a silly animation without any deeper meaning at all. Itchy and Scratchy would be proud!
p.s. It would have been hysterical if you had a cat climb out of the box at the very end.

Nope, it was the first one with the meanings and stuff.

Yeeha! I knew it.Hentron wrote:Nope, it was the first one with the meanings and stuff.

Seriously though, I really enjoy these animations. I don't know why exactly but those two guys are just fun. It's just plain silly fun. Not too long, no lofty goals of enlightenment or a social agenda. Not a ton of pop culture references that us older folk don't understand.

I also found ANOTHER reference in this animation. It's a more extreme version of Wile E. Coyote not realizing he has run off a cliff until he looks down. Will's head in the box is almost the same concept but taken further and extended. His head had already been removed but following the rules of cartoon reality he isn't aware of this until he looks down.

p.s. I will say the severed head was a tiny bit extreme... but will let it pass. As a cat person I always felt that Schrodinger was a cruel bastard killing all those innocent cats but was able to appreciate his thought experiment. We could start calling this "William's head" instead.

Re: April Fools - A Nick and Will Short
As always, the animation is hilarious and these two guys just plain make me laugh, but it's the little things that really make me guffaw: the horror music sting on the reveal as well as the ensuing "squish" sound effect that was pretty obviously someone saying "squish." Those two touches had me watching this over and over. Excellent work!

What's in the box!? WHAAAT'S IN THE BOXXX?!?!
I think this is my favorite yet. Short and effective. This stuff makes good use of the characters and animation style. I think the darker elements play well because you've found a middle ground where the characters look "real" enough that I'm not feeling bad about cute cuddly cartoons being cruel to each other. But silly and cartoonish in simplicity and movement that it doesn't come off as unpleasant and gruesome (or at least not in an off-putting way) Good job.

I thought it was more like the end of "7", when the guy has his wife's head delivered in a parcel. So there was a pop reference! Wasn't there? Anyway, it was funny!
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?
Re: April Fools - A Nick and Will Short
Well, I've always felt that the movie "7" stole that reference from the original 1959 "House on Haunted Hill":jahnocli wrote:I thought it was more like the end of "7", when the guy has his wife's head delivered in a parcel. So there was a pop reference! Wasn't there? Anyway, it was funny!

Okay... maybe "stole" is a stretch... but... uh... influenced?

Re: April Fools - A Nick and Will Short
Thank you all for the overwhelmingly positive response.
I'll let you in on a secret: This one was inspired by my misinterpretation of Johnathan Coulton's song, "Dissolve."
Stay tuned folks, we have big stuff on the horizon!

What do you all think of these shorter cartoons vs the longer ones like "Titanic"?

Re: April Fools - A Nick and Will Short
Short ones are more likely to go viral - brutal humor, but I had to laugh.

Re: April Fools - A Nick and Will Short
They're both great. The Titanic one was only 4 minutes - still well within the attention span of the average idiot on YouTube.Pinesal wrote:What do you all think of these shorter cartoons vs the longer ones like "Titanic"?
However - from a strictly selfish point of view, I like the shorter ones better because you can do more of them, which means more loads o' larfs.

Interesting question. The younger generation has a short attention span... the older generation has senior moments... so if it's too long I forget how it started and lose interest.

The shorter ones are actually better both for the audience and the producer. The Titanic one was a teeny tiny bit on the longish side for my tastes.
Actually, length is irrelevant. It's not the length it's the timing. Sometimes a joke can go too long. Like on Saturday Night Live. They often have a very funny sketch idea that works very well, but then they ruin it by having it go too long or it takes too long to get to the punchline. If something is funny get to the point, hit the punchline and move on.
