This reminds me of a episode of loony toons when a dog ate himself. I watched this about 10 times, to try to figure how how his face came off/turned inside out, and i think it has something to do with his tongue? or did his jaw unhinge and scrape off his face?

Its a strange animation, but strange doesn't mean bad. It kinda looks like Super Jail, a series I like because its weirdness. Imo, the only thing thats missing is sound.

this is a clip from a music video I'm working on for a death metal band. There won't be any sound aside from blast beats, powerchords and guttural vocals.

he wrapped his jaw around his head and scraped his face off with his lower teeth. The tongue is just there for exaggeration and to be gross.

Speaking of which, given the extreme gross out humor of the cartoon, I might not post the final product on this forum out of respect for everyone else. Instead I'll just selectively toss up pieces here and there as I go along. For those who think you can't do frame by frame with ASP, I'm here to prove you all wrong.

Or maybe that was just me who thought that...

Just curious: Have you tried frame by frame animation? Because stuff like this is MUCH easier in other software.

I can't afford other software. And besides, once you get used to the method, it really isn't that hard.

Well why start now?

Really this looks good, and as long as you put some kind of warning--or perhaps many, many warnings--you should be OK. Maybe also link to the video rather than embed it.

Anyway, this looks great even if it is a bit hard to tell what's happening until the end when his face is gone.

That's one of the things naysayers key in on with Anime Studio as a way to try and take it down a peg; but as you've seen and now shown us, it is possible.

I'll link it in the future. and then I'll prelude it with embedded videos of ghosts crying "TURN BACK! TURRRRRRRRRRRRN BACK!!!!"

I am starting to realize the flaw in the motion. When I finished it, i was so excited because the prospect of successfully animating something like that seemed so impossible to me that I immediately rushed it onto the forum. I'm dumb like that. I reckon the issue takes place in the anticipation frame just before he swings his jaw upwards over his own face. The jaw is just too thin to the point that for a second you have no idea what you're even looking at. I should stretch the jaw and make it wider, otherwise it just looks like maximum butt. I shall screw with it further when I get back.

If you were to recommend a program, which would it be? I've been looking into toonboom since Flash is way out of my budget league.

MediaFire have an old version of Flash (Flash "8") available as a free download. It's perfectly usable for frame-by-frame animation (and a lot more besides):

This hasn't got some of the latest Flash stuff (like bones and whatnot) but still does a good job. It's the version I've got on my computer (!), but unfortunately I had to pay for mine all those years ago...
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

Budget is a very good reason to stick with ASP! (One of the many reasons actually!)

Usually I'd recommend TVPaint for hand drawn animation, although it's quite old-fashioned and stubborn in use (give the trial a shot and see if you like it). The new Toonboom Harmony also seems very good, but I haven't had the chance to try it yet.

If you're looking for a cheap option (and are on a PC), try the old version of Animation Paper. The creator released it for free. You'd still have to color in Gimp (free photoshop alternative). Or maybe finish it off in ASP. Getting your timing and poses right for something like this will be much easier when actually drawing.

I like how you're trying different things in ASP than the usual puppetry though, but you'll become a better animator if you give frame by frame a shot, I'm sure :)
