Taking a crack at a digital background

Post by bupaje »

I took a side trip trying to use ArtRage and PSP to make a background for a Moho animation idea I have. My first significant effort at digital painting anything besides textures and my first real effort to use the Wacom. It ended up too dark for the toony animation I intended but going to do some more just to get more experience. I think my texture making experience made me add too many little details that detract from the composition and the rocks in the front look too contrived -two neat piles. Anyway comments and advice always welcome.

Yes, some things could be improved, but I think it's pretty good!
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

Personally i like it. But for animation, its too detailed. Unless everything else you animate is detailed along side of it, but then the focus comes off the characters and more onto the background meaning everything looks like a mess... or moving sick. Just my thoughts.

Thanks. I agree -too many details. Tough to figure out what details are important in a toon background. I am looking at them in cartoons now and some are very simple vague shapes, some use more detailed objects. Wish there was a 'background layout' gallery -anyone know of a place that features background layouts or even sells stock (if there is such a thing)?
