Flash crashes when imorting swf exorted from AS10

Post by Autofire »

Hi
I have made some animations in Anime Studio 10 that I have exported to swf and try to import to Flash.
However, Flash just crashes when I try to import these files. Both on mine and my colleagues PC this happens. The files are 900k and 1MB.
Previously I have exported smalle animations that work fine to import to Flash.

The swf file Works fine in Flash-players such as Explorer btw.
Are there any particular elements in Anime Studio that can be the cause for this? Does size matter?

It's not so much the size that matters. It's how much your animation works within Flash's restrictions. However, if the SWF plays in the player, it should import to Flash as well.

Try to do selective exports. Switch off certain layers and test import again, maybe it's only one layer which causes the problem.

I assume that you took care of all SWF export restrictions mentioned in the Appendix of the manual.

Not sure if this applies here, but I had to give up importing Anime Studio SWF export into Flash CC because it no longer supports that file format. I only mention this incase you may have updated Flash recently which is preventing the import. It doesn't usually cause a crash in Flash though, just an error pop up.

This is a heads up for the future if Anime Studio SWF import is important to your workflow. If you ever update to Flash CC you will no longer be able to import ANY SWF files of any kind. Many Flash users are royally p.o'd about this change, including me. I used this feature to convert Anime Studio export to Illustrator format for static illustrations and EPS export.

Thanks for all of you input. :)
I have tried various things now, such as turning off different layers etc, but it didn't seem to be one particular layer that caused the problem. When I split the animation in two, from 500 frames to 2x250 frames i was able to import the files without Flash CS5 crashing. So from this it does seem like the size of the files could have an impact. :?

One thing that might effect import based on "size" or "length" of the animation is how layers are key framed in Anime Studio.

Basically point key framing or flexibinding bone point animating, creates... "frame by frame" animation in the SWF export. You will end up with a completely separate piece of artwork repeated over and over for every frame. It doesn't simply animate the change in the shape, the SWF export produces a new unique vector shape on each frame. This can make the file HUGE and complex. Instead of animating the movement of single "object" or "instance", you are duplicating the entire shape for every frame.

When you use only layer binding (bones) or layer transformations to animate, the layer becomes an "instance" in the SWF export so that the movement of a single object is animated over time saving on overhead in the file. It's very much like using Actionscript or instances to animate objects in Flash. For example Instead of drawing a new shape on each frame for a bouncing ball animation, you can either "tween" the layer translation and use squash/stretch or you could use an Actionscript formula to simulate movement of an instance.

I know that many FBF animators who use Flash will turn on onion skin and simply sketch or draw new artwork for each frame, like traditional cell animation. This works when working in Flash directly with no trouble, however, importing a large file like that created from Anime Studio may be choking Flash.

Thanks Heyvern,

A lot of frame by frame animation may be the problem. For what I wanted to achieve in this animation I needed to do a lot of frame by frame animation.

I realize now with all the issues of export and import that it might probably have been better to done this animation directly in Flash, although the animation itself might have taken a bit longer to do in Flash.
