I think the info I posted will be good to tell your friend though. Because of the way the licensing system works, it really wouldn't do him much good to use a shared license either.

Besides, if he really finds the program useful or simply enjoyable, he should support the developers for their hard work. They have families to support and bills to pay like everybody else.
