Imported video files not showing?

So for this video/animation I'm working on, I have video footage that I want to animate over.
The idea is that I'll be taking this video footage, and then use AS to animate mouths and eyes of the video footage.

Pretty simple concept, really. How I'm doing this is I edited all my footage and exported it in my video editor. (Not AS, of course) Then I was going to import the video into Anime Studio, and animate mouths and eyes over the footage. After I've lipsynced and done all the animation and what not, I'll hid get rid of the video file from AS, and export JUST the mouths and eyes. (I'm not exactly sure how I want to do this, but I'll probably export to a WMV for transparency or if that doesn't work, I'll just export to PNG frames.)

But whenever I try to import the edited video file to Anime Studio, the video doesn't appear. It has the audio, but no video. I tried fiddling with the settings, and trying different file formats, (MP4, AVI, WMV) and none of them work. How do I get the video to show? Is it because the video file is compressed wrong or something? Does it need to be a specific file type?

Anyway, any ideas would be great. I'm using Anime Studio Pro 9 (not 9.5)

Try a using a codec that supports whole frames, like motion jpeg or png; this should work in .avi or .mov. I'm not sure why the formats you tried didn't show up but you'll want to use a format that allows you to step through the footage frame by frame. I haven't actually tried this myself but I'm curious so I'll give it a try in just a minute--will let you know how it goes.

The problem is, the video editor I'm working in has pretty limited exporting support, atleast from what I've seen. I did try an uncompressed version of the file (which ended up being 99 gigabytes.) but nothing else works. So it's obviously a problem with the compression. I've tried multiple compression types but none of them work, some of them even crashed AS. The only thing I've gotten to work is the 99 gig uncompressed, and I don't have the space to spare to use it. I tried to then convert it using other programs, but that didn't work either.

Finally got it to work. I had to use a video converter to convert the footage correctly. I had been trying this a lot, but I finally found a compressor that makes it work.

Hi Guys, read this post to help make my video play back smoother. I found by converting my mp4 file to AVI (using MPEG Streamclip software) it worked a treat. Thanks for your help up on this.
