HELP! AS9 crashes when exporting. "Runtime error!"

Post by Hopper200456 »

Hey guys. So I made this Christmas animation, and it looks great, I finished it just in time. But when exporting, it keeps crashing. It's fairly intensive, a lot of particle effects and lots of layered backgrounds.
It says:
"Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program File..."

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."

I've tried multiple settings.
I'm exporting at 1080p at 60 FPS. I've tried export with lower quality, but the same thing happens.
I've tried exporting it in batches. I've tried multiple file formats. PNG, AVI, and a Quicktime file. (It crashes before I can select a compression codec.)
I've tried just exporting 1 frame, still doesn't work. I tried importing it all into a different file, then exporting. Didn't work.
I tried restarting my computer. I've tried it on two different computers, one on Windows 10 the other on Windows 8.

Please help. I worked all week trying to get this done by Christmas, and surprisingly I actually did it. But then this happens and now I'm not going to be able to finish it in time. Pretty frustrating.
I'm using Anime Studio 9.2 on a Windows 10 Desktop. ( But again, I tried it on Windows 8 )
I am totally up for sharing my file and letting someone else export it, but I doubt that'll help.

Also Merry Christmas/whatever you celebrate.

First, update to 9.2, it's a free update. http://my.smithmicro.com/anime-pro-updates.html

Oh crud, sorry. I forgot to mention that I did do that. It didn't seem to help, but it is always good to be running the latest version.

In that case, if you want to post or PM me a link to the file, I'll see if it will render here. And if not, I'll see if I can troubleshoot it.

Okay, I think I've found your problem. It did crash on export for me too, using AS9.2. So I looked at the text file and found the font in text layers listed as "?????? regular". I'm assuming you made these layers on a different computer (or with this font installed) and then edited the AS file without that font available and without editing these text layers to correct for the missing font.

There are 3 text layer. You just need to go into their layer settings (it will warn you about the font used in that layer not being found). AS will select an available font, so you can either just hit OK or select a new one first.

I just rendered enough to get past the previous crashes, so let me know if it gives you anymore trouble.

Okay wow, that's really great. Thanks so much!
However, I think I got it all and it's still not working. I'm not sure if there's still one more that I'm somehow missing, or if it just doesn't like me. Do layers that were text layers but converted to vectors count? If it's not a problem, what 3 text files was it? (Their file names)
Thanks again!

No, vector layers don't count. Both "Zebes" group layers contain a text layer called "FINISH", and one called "YOU AQUIRED AN ENERGY TANK. Score!" in a similarly named group.

It's still is crashing for me. I tried changing the font to Ariel Black and even deleting them but it's still crashing. Would it be possible for you to send me your file and see if it'll work for me? Or do you think that wouldn't help?

Yeah, it's giving me trouble here too now. So far it's working with multi-threaded rendering disabled.

AS11 doesn't seem to have any trouble multi-threaded rendering this file.

I'm still getting errors when I export, even after I turned it off. Is there any other render options you have on/off that might help?
My Rendering options currently look like this:

Thanks so much for really helping, I wouldn't think to try any of this.

Seems to work fine here, with the settings you show, but then I don't have the images for the file. Could it be that you are running low on RAM? A lot of high res images can really eat up RAM, although I wouldn't imagine that being a problem on a Win 8 machine. If that is the case though, you might try rendering separate layer comps and putting them together in another app. Might also help to try render smaller segments of the timeline and turn off all unneeded layers for each render.

Yeah I've tried only rendering segments, but I haven't tried rendering the layers separately.

Just tried it, still getting the same error. I also tried doing both, same thing.

I got it to render. I deleted all the fire particle effects I have, and it now renders fine. I have no idea what I'm going to do, as the fire effects were kinda... crucial. But at least I now know what is causing the problems so I can actually work on making it work. Maybe if I render them separately or split the fire scenes up it'll work, but we'll see.

I really got to get the money to upgrade to AS 11.
Thanks for the help!

Okay, I've sent you a new version of the file that should render for you, particles, multi-threaded and all.

I've seen a problem before where the unique layer ID used in the AS file (when viewed as a text file) is duplicated, and all of your "Layer 1" vector layers in your particles had this problem. I started out changing these manually, and there's a ton in that file, but then I remembered AS11 will export an AS9 file. So AS11 fixed it.
