A transparent black-filled layer with multiply blend mode masked over the character.

Group - Hide all mask
- Vector - mask this layer, transparent black shape covering character, multiply blend mode
- Character - add to mask

I really don't get it.
I put two shapes one normal blending and other the multiple blending. didn't work.
I'm not talking about the bg in video I'm talking about the voodoo dolls when they change color in animation.
what does black got to do with changing color?

Did you render to see the effect of the blend mode?

Did you follow the advice exactly?

1. You need a group.
2. You need a mask layer (this would be your character).
3. You need a vector layer with a shape in the desired colour.
4. Put 2 + 3 into 1. Mask layer must be bottom.
5. Set masking of the group layer to "hide all".
6. Set 2 to "add to mask".
7. Set 3 to "mask this layer".
8. Render.
9. Adjust opacity, colour, and layer blend mode of 3.
