using switch layer with bitmap images

I'm trying to use a switch layer to hold different views of a head, ie side, 3/4, front bit these are not vector drawings but bitmap images. W I am adding this switch layer as part of my character under the same bone layer and adding a bone to my head, when if I try switching layer the image just does not show. Any ideas? Thank you

- Is the image still linked (if not, broken image icon appears)?
- Is that image layer visible?
- Is that image layer's opacity 100%?
- Is that image at the correct position?
- Is that image layer's point of origin correct?
