Hm - I like these sketches much better than the vector artwork.
Have you tried to:
- use very thin outlines (like here)
- maybe multiple lines
- avoid strong saturated colours
- use textures in the fills?

thanks .... i do agree bitmap has a much traditional look compare to vector which looks flat. But bitmap has a bit of a challenge when rigging and animating.

I can`t speak for slowtiger, but I`m pretty sure he was not talking about the traditional look. To me, it looks like someone else did the tracing of your sketches.
Your sketches are much warmer, so to say, which your vector ones are lacking. I was about to ask you if you could post both, sketch and vector in a same thread and I`m kind of sure that you`d gain something from that.
Very nice sketches - the loss of character/soul after tracing and adding flat color is fairly typical in animation. It is complained about fairly regularly and has been for decades. I still like the colored versions as well personally.
i agree one of my favorite animation recently is called The Illusionist (2010) all the characters painted flat no shadows except for the background of course. great avatar by the way
