My first animation - "Mad World"

Post by Anatoly »

Hello, I'm new here!
I've just made an animation using moho. It can be found on my website:
http://www.anatoly-online.com
I'm sorry for not posting a direct link - I've been unemployed since june and the purchase of Moho had almost killed my account. If you feel sorry for me - click on banners on my page  I'm just joking! (You can still do it though!).
Anyway, I was watching this forum for a while and now I'm happy to join! :P

Hi Anatoly!

Very good composition both the animation and the music, fitting soo good together, you've build your animation very much like a music composition, I like it a lot.
I feel you've got a nice touch when for expressions through pictures, nice work!

Thanks!
That's because it fits my mood. I'm horribly depresed. To make this cartoon I've been listening to the song non-stop (WinAmp on a loop) while drawing, taking pictures, animating and editing. After I was done (5 and a half hours) I was ready to kill myself, but because I had a chance of being saved by other people I've decided to wait till the next day. And, of course, the next morning I didn't feel like it.
But I always have visuals for music in my head. I just need to find time to draw all of it...
I have about 4 new ideas that are fully developed, so I just need to pick one of them. One of them seems to be really likely because it also fits my mood, but it will require much more animation than "Mad World" (Which was like the music slow and almost static at times).

EDIT:
The video is in WMV format, and is about 5 megs - if anyone has problems viewing it I can make it into any other format. I'm thinking of producing a high-resolution quicktime version.

Very nice work. Truly outstanding!

It is a very emotional piece of work, and really resonated with me. Particularly the parts in the school where the top of the head is shown, while the rest of the students are happy, talking by their lockers, and also the teacher looks right through the invisible student. Wow.

You definitely have a gift for telling an emotional story.

"Mad world" is one of two my favorite songs, (the other is The church "Under The Milky Way" I play them with my guitar)
it was really interesting to see it animated, I often have such feeling about what is going on in this mad world.

Which is very strange because I'm russian. My english is not so good and I've been living in America for just 2 and a half years.
But I see your point - everything is not so bad as it could be which is the only thing that brings me joy, actually - I DID have a better life in my country than I do now in the country of prospering capitalism. I feel really alienated and the school scene is right out of my first day in the U.S. And I'm not saying that I'm the most unfortunate person in the world - I'm sitting in a nice house, in front of the computer that I've bought with a broadband and I still have some money to make it throught a month, but I don't feel happy because my social life is nothing like it used to be.
Speaking of statistics - do you know how many people commit suicide every day? Just in america - one suicide every 90 minutes, but devide it by 3 for european countries.
Anyway, I have picked another song for the animation - this time it's more optimistic, but the song is still about not being able to be with friends.

And guys, thank you very much for your support. Boy I need it!

Maybe - we'll see... Newgrounds seems to get away with it. I have the message that the song is by it's author and the comment in WMV file is "The song is by Gary Jules - go buy his album!".
As for my next toon which will also be music based - the mp3 is freely avaiable from the band's website, so I don't think I will be braking any copyrights. But the song will be in russian.

I would love to dig into the politics brought up here (like there are still more poeple missing in New Orleans from hurricane Katrina than died on 9/11, it's all a matter of perception, and the press), but I must refrain to keep *my* mental sanity. :-)

I'm glad that you picked a topic that has to do with being away from friends, since that seems to be making you sad (you mentioned being in a house with a computer and broadband and no social life). Maybe that will be of some comfort.

There seems to be a common thread here in the message board that pops up every once-in-a-while about depression among animators. I think that with the creativity must come the angst. Someone on here has a signature that is something like:

Code: Select all

Anxiety is the handmaiden of creativity.

- Chuck Jones
(I apologize if I got it wrong).

I look forward to your next work, and I hope that you will provide english subtitles for those of us who don't speak Russian.

Hang in there,

Well, thanks again. Unfortunately my sadness lowers my creativity. I've used to get a million ideas in five minutes and have a nice one (for a video game, for example) made, but now I have some sort of writer's block. The only thing that motivates me is if music or some other area of art connects with my alienation. If before I could create stuff that related to different areas, I'm afraid that for a while I'll be working with the same emotions.
I had some comfort today - 2 of my friends just recorder a 10 minute video where they congratulate me on New Year which was a nice reply to the vido I've sent them before the New Year. I've also talked with my other friend in Russia on a phone for two hours. My friends meant a lot for me (Most of them I know since I was 6 or 7 and we bonded together really well - even now they haven't separated as sometimes happens when adult life throws people around) and they still do.
I also decided not to include any subtitles - I have visuals that display lyrics well I think, but I might provide a literal translation on this message board.

If anybody is interested I did a sketch of one scene of my upcoming cartoon. I've started to work on it and did some backgrounds, but I'm not in the right mood, so it's unlikely that I'll continue to work on it today... Maybe in the evening.
Anyway, here's the sketch:
